PUSH wasn’t sure how long he slept. It didn’t feel long enough, but he was having too good of a dream to care. A mouth kept brushing up against his. Hot breath blew across his face as a strong pair of arms turned his body to a more accessible angle before kissing him full-on again. It felt so good Push didn’t want to open his eyes. For a moment, he let himself believe he was kissing Scratch. It was a dream, after all, so this one time would be okay.
“Push?”
Scratch’s voice caused his eyes to fly open. “Sorry,” Scratch said, backing away slightly. “I thought you were awake.”
“I thought I was dreaming.” The words came out of his mouth before he could think twice about it. “I was dreaming about kissing you.”
Scratch smiled, his white teeth flashing in the dark. “Does that make me the man of your dreams?”
Push gulped.
“I told you,” Scratch said insistently as he brought their faces closer together with one arm. “I’m not giving up, and I’m not going away. I spent a good year trying to figure out what I wanted. I’m taking my shot now.”
“You’re straight.”
Even to Push, the words didn’t sound believable. Scratch narrowed his eyes in frustration and let out a long sigh. “Why do you keep bringing that up?”
“Because you are,” Push insisted feebly, though even he could tell this was a losing argument on his end. “And you’ll want to be with a woman someday, and get married, and have kids with her—”
“What makes you so sure?” Scratch demanded, cutting Push off.
Push watched as Scratch turned and lay flat on his back, staring up at the ceiling angrily. “Have I ever talked about kids before, or finding a girl to settle down with?” he demanded, not looking at Push now.
Push watched his friend for a moment as he lay on his side. “I assumed the reason you were plowing through most of the female half of the Association had something to do with that.”
“I was looking for something,” Scratch stated forcefully. “And no matter where I looked, I wasn’t finding it. So I thought, maybe I just wasn’t cut out for that sort of thing. And then I thought about you and about us together, and things started to click.”
Scratch looked at him then, and his eyes showed a ton of hurt. “Did you honestly think I hadn’t gone over all of this to myself already?” he demanded.
“I….”
Push stopped himself short before he could finish his sentence. Even in his baffled and half-asleep state, he knew not to put his train of thought into words carelessly. The last thing he needed was to let it slip he’d assumed Scratch was just looking to satisfy an itch.
“I hadn’t thought about it,” he confessed instead.
Scratch turned away again. “I had,” he said, his voice warm with frustration. “I thought about it every day. I fell asleep with it running around in my mind. I needed to know first, though, if this was something I could handle before I told you how I felt.
